Yes when Going for No...
by Richard Fenton & Andrea Waltz

Thomas McDonell might not be a familiar a name.  A New York-based independent artist, McDonell’s talents are plenty, having been involved in painting and various other forms of art, all in his early-20s.

One day the phone rang and he was offered a role in a small independent film, which he did, leading to another role, and then another, finally landing him ‘Prom,’ a larger film released in 2010, where he’s seen by Tim Burton.   Fast forward one year: Tim Burton is casting for the upcoming remake of the 1960’s supernatural soap opera, Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp in the lead role as vampire Barnabas Collins.  The screenplay calls for a young, dashing, Depp-lookalike to play Barnabas in his younger, formative years.  As it turns out, McDonell is the perfect ‘Young Johnny Depp.’

But the interesting part of his story is how this all happened in the first place. Thomas McDonell auditioned for movie roles, though he had no real training as an actor, nor did he expect to be one.  So, why audition?

Because he wanted the audition footage of him being criticized and berated by strangers giving him feedback for a video art project he was doing.  To get the footage he would tell the producers and casting directors that he wanted to review it for the purposes of ‘getting better’ and ‘mastering his craft.’  As such, he went into every audition with zero expectation of being hired… with no attachment to the outcome… in other words, he went in ‘going for no.’

But, as we say all the time, if you fail often enough – with zero attachment to the outcome – the ‘yeses’ will show up in your life in the most surprising ways. They always do.
