Inspiring Comebacks
by Andrea Waltz & Richard Fenton
We had two interesting "comeback" stories in sports over the last week.
Baltimore Orioles player Chris Davis was in a slump. Well, not just any slump. A slump so bad that when he was 0 for 28, the local bars started offering free alcohol when he got his next hit. They never poured an ounce because this was a slump so bad that it went for the entire 2018 season. But, it finally happened. He got a hit that scored two runs. (Even the other team's fans cheered for him!) By that point he'd set a record: 0-54.
But if you didn't hear about Chris, you probably heard about Tiger. Golfer Tiger Woods managed to win the Masters again, his first major title since 2008, and is now the second-oldest winner in Masters history. This, following a complete personal and professional meltdown in front of the entire world coupled with a slew of emotional, mental and physical challenges since then. So, on that final Sunday, Tiger came up from behind to pull off the
win. People who cover sports are calling it one of the greatest comebacks in golf history.
Writer Anne Lamott has a great quote, "There is nothing as sweet as a comeback, when you are down and out, about to lose, and out of time."
There is something about a comeback story, right? Maybe it's because we all want to know we can have one too, should we need it. And we probably will because there are setbacks, obstacles, and life is full of curve balls.
The comeback is real. It's possible for all of us. If you're getting hits today, that's great. If you're in a slump, hang in there. Keep swinging. Your comeback is coming.
