"The very first company I started failed with a great bang. The second one failed a little bit less, but still failed. The third one, you know, proper failed, but it was kind of okay. I recovered quickly. Number four almost didn't fail. It still didn't
really feel great, but it did okay. Number five was PayPal."

How to Deal with a Setback by Andrea
Waltz
“You can’t fix a leaky boat by drilling more holes.” - Richard Fenton
If your boat (your business and life) is filling up with water, you can’t drill holes in your boat and expect that the water will go back out the other way. In other words, you
need to stop doing the things that got you into that situation in the first place.
If you are having a setback whether something small or a full-blown crisis, it is going to cause you some pain. The key to getting through is having the right mindset and taking the proper steps to handle it.
There are two choices as we see
it...
1. Identify the gap and figure out the most simple and elegant work around. Is it really a setback or are things just not happening as fast as you want? Sometimes the setback is not really a setback. It merely requires that you apply both patience and persistence. If you do need to make a change, stick to the simplest, fastest work around to see if that gets you back on
track.
2. Step back and do a major rework and/or change your plan. Be willing to look at the situation honestly and your part in it. Are you drilling holes in your boat? If so, the sooner you have the courage to change, the better.
No matter which approach you take, focus on your personal strengths to grow through the setback and to move through
the pain and discomfort. Setbacks are a wake-up call to make sure we are on track. Moving forward does not happen without setbacks. Staying put is safer and yet risky at the same time.

Ever Dream of Having a Book? |
Twenty years ago, Richard and I did something that would change our lives and set us on a course to build a successful business. We wrote and self-published our first book. It was called
Unlocking the Secrets of Retail Magic and it was probably the reason we succeeded in our business. It became our business card. It gave us credibility. (Yes, even being self-published.) And it got us clients. If we had not had the book, we are not sure where we would be today. It also gave us the courage to publish a second book and then eventually, Go for No!
What about you? Would having a book help you and your business?
Richard and I have been giving advice to people for years when it comes to writing and publishing books. But with our own writing and speaking career, we
never had time to pursue anything beyond the casual consultation. But now, we are finally ready to share some things we have learned along the way.
In just a
couple weeks we are doing a free webinar called, How to Write a Short Book that Will Sell Forever for selfgrowth.com subscribers and we wanted to invite you as well. If it sounds interesting, just click here to get registered.
We know the thought of writing and publishing can be overwhelming. And, then there is the biggest concern: what if all that time and money spent is for nothing and the book never sells? It's a valid
concern.
There are some things you must do, some things to make it wildly easier on yourself, and some mistakes you absolutely must avoid. And trust us, we know what those things are! We've been at this for 20 years. In 1998, we wrote and self-published our first book. We sold 40,000 copies. And Amazon didn't exist!
If you know anyone who is writing a book or thinking about it, they should hear this too, we'd really appreciate you sharing with them!
