One of the best ways to make a connection with someone when presenting your product or service is to tell a story.
Have you ever watched a movie and despite the action or the mystery, the end felt hollow and
disappointing? There is a reason for that and it usually has nothing to do with the plot. It has everything to do with the main character. And often it is because they didn't give you a reason to care whether the main character lived or died, succeeded or failed.
As writers of fiction and nonfiction, we have been students of character development for many years and one thing
is true: people care about a character when you understand their story, their background - their hope, dream, goal or mission.
In our book, Go for No! (a business fable) we
have our main character in a variety of situations from as simple as getting Chinese food to being fearful of his sales manager, trying to impress his wife with a sale he made, and then later worrying about meeting his quota. Why? Because we wanted you to get to know the character, relate and care about him. We needed you to root for him as he learns 'go for no' and then hope that he is able get back to his "real life" and push through his self-imposed limitations to
succeed.
You have a story to tell...
You can make a connection with someone when presenting your product or service by sharing your story. You can be the main character that they are rooting for! A
quick personal story is the easiest of all to tell because it's yours. That said, if you aren't convinced your story is ideal to make the point and connect to your product or service, you can certainly tell a story about someone else which can still be very powerful. Just remember, you have a story to tell... the key is, get out
there and start sharing it.
