An Alert from Wendy Weiss:
Small Business Trends reports that, “a bit more than 50% of small businesses fail in the first 4 years.” They go on to say, “Thousands of businesses fail even during the best of economic times and in industries that ride high during those periods.”
That’s pretty scary news if you are a new business owner or if you work in a new or startup business.

So why do so many businesses fail so quickly? One of the reasons is certainly the inability to generate enough sales to keep the business afloat.

Yesterday I was working with a business owner who was not making his prospecting calls. He’s just started his business within the past year and so needs to build his pipeline of opportunities. This client is smart, resourceful, committed and a hard worker, yet he was not taking the actions he needs to take in order to make his business succeed. Without prospecting he will have no opportunities and without opportunities he will have no sales. Period. This is true for business owners, this is also true for sales representatives.

I asked this client why with something so vitally important he was not taking action. My client responded that he was simply, “Afraid of rejection.”

We began to work through his fears and by the end of our time together he had experienced a major shift in his thinking. He was no longer so very fearful of picking up the telephone to call prospective new customers. He’s on his way.

Then it occurred to me that it is unlikely that this client is alone in this fear of rejection.
