Success is in the Margins
by
Richard Fenton & Andrea
Waltz
We read a fascinating article from The Sheaf, University of
Saskatchewan which made the case that we systematically drill in a fear
of failure into children, especially as they move through the school
system, quote: "The first thing students look at when a
professor returns an exam or assignment is the grade -- not
the corrections or the suggestions that are scrawled in the margins.
There are no marks awarded for doing something new or for caring deeply
about what you're learning. When only the grade is important,
students lose any interest in doing work beyond what is necessary to
get a good mark."
So we think it's an intriguing idea that perhaps what we need to know
to be successful in this world is often found in the margins.
What we mean by this is that the feedback that we require to correct
our course and move towards our dreams, while sometimes painful to
hear, is exactly what we need. The problem is that many of us
tend to avoid hearing anything that we consider to be negative and as a
result miss the opportunity to improve.
For example, isn't it interesting when someone says something negative
about us, our first instinct is to criticize the person for giving the
feedback rather than asking, What can I learn from it? Yes, sometimes
people will say things to us and/or about us that we should completely
ignore or discard, but before we do... maybe it would be wise to
ask, is there a grain of truth here and if so, how can I use this
to become better?
Which brings to mind when our book Go for No! was first released how
someone had sent us a list of typos. Our first reaction was, "wow, this
person missed the point of the book and focused on typos?!"
However, the next thing we did was fix the typos!

Jia
Jiang, who we featured a couple months ago with his 100 Day Rejection
challenge did a nice 'go for no' shout out for his Day
76 Rejection. His videos are
great, such a sweet guy. Watching him
gather all the no's (and yeses) you can tell he is really getting quite
good at 'going for no!'

We had an amazing time in Dublin and Great Britain this month. Spoke to
a total of about 8000+ people over 3 engagements which was a
blast! Had some tourist time too. In Dublin we visited
St. Michan's underground
crypts and saw 'the mummies.'

"It
goes back to whatever our early experiences were with "No, " and most
of us had some kind of experience. I know you say, "No doesn't mean
never," but for a lot of us it did mean "never." - Elayne Savage

weeks ago we sent out a special note for our direct sales and network
marketing readers about 7-figure earner Mark Januszewski (he
calls
himself the World's Laziest Networker and yet he's
very successful!) Mark has created a great program
called Go90Grow and his free training videos are still
available
but we know the program will close soon. If it sounds interesting

Month's Trivia
Answer |
Judson
displayed his
clasp-locker at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair but was basically ignored
(it didn't work that well.) The device was remodeled in 1913
by
another man turning what is now known as the "zipper" into a great
success.
