The Young Man & The Folk Star
by Richard Fenton & Andrea Waltz

One of the greatest contributions to folk music in the 20th Century (and, perhaps, to the world of music in general) was a song written by a Young Man from Chicago. The Young Man believed he had written something special--a song he felt should be heard by the masses--and for that to happen he needed to have it recorded by an established name... by a Folk Star!

So when the Young Man heard that one of the biggest Folk Stars in the world of music at the time was coming to a club in Chicago, he made his move. As the story goes...

"The Folk Star was sitting in a club after a show trying not to be noticed, when a Young Man approached, telling him he had a song the Folk Star might be interested in. The Folk Star was not happy; after all, there was always someone who wanted him to hear a song!

The Young Man assured the Folk Star that he wouldn't be disappointed, telling him the song was about riding around on railroads.  At that point the Folk Star said, "I hate train songs!"  But the Young Man would not quit, he would not be deterred. So, to get rid of the Young Man, the Folk Star said, "Fine, give me your tape."  The Young Man didn't have a tape, but said he could play it for him, adding: "I promise to leave you alone if you just listen to it, just once."

The Folk Star was incensed, made even more angry at this point by being forced to sit and listen to the Young Man actually play the song for him! But, if for no other reason than to get back to his privacy, the Folk Star agreed to hear the Young Man play.

By the time the Young Man had finished, the Folk Star had completely changed his mind. Choked up by the power of what he had just heard, and fighting back tears, the Folk Star said: "I was wondering if maybe, just perhaps, you might give me permission to record your song?"  "Well, yes," said the Young Man. "I'd be honored. That is why I played it for you."

Recently, the website 'Folk Alley' published a list of the 100 Greatest/Most Essential Folk Songs of All time. The list includes:

1)    This Land is Your Land (Woody Guthrie)
2)    Blowin' In the Wind (Bob Dylan)
3)    __________________________________
4)    If I Had a Hammer (Pete Seeger)
5)    Where Have All the Flowers Gone? (The Kingston Trio)

And the #3 song?  A little tune about a train ride called, "The City of New Orleans", written by a Young Man named Steve Goodman... recorded by a Folk Star named Arlo Guthrie: the son of the man who was voted #1.

Had Arlo Guthrie not agreed to sit and listen to Steve play his tune that night, he would have missed the opportunity to join his father, Woody Guthrie, who was voted #1.

NOtable Quotables from the Go for No! Movie

"It's the oldest sales cliché in the work, 'every 'No' gets you closer to a yes,' but those clichés are clichés for a reason, they work some of the time, and that one does." - Larry Winget
