Rejection Therapy Goes Mainstream
by
Richard Fenton & Andrea
Waltz
Thanks to Jia Jiang's viral Krispy Kreme video
we're hopeful that a 'go for no' mindset is taking hold in
today's consciousness!
If you have not seen it, the video features Jia entering a Krispy Kreme
store and asking for an 'Olympic-style' logo of donuts - something he
is certain will get him a quick 'no' response. Instead, he encounters
Jackie, a tenacious and creative employee who actually pulls off the
task. So, in the process of trying to get rejected, Jiang ends up
discovering someone who does her utmost to go the extra mile and makes
Krispy Kreme look pretty good too.
Now, you might be wondering... what was the point of the
doughnut stunt in the first place? As explained in his Hope
From Nope blog, in November
2012, Jia was devastated after being turned down by a
prominent investor. He decided he needed to build "the
necessary entrepreneurial skill sets" - overcoming fear of rejection
being something he wanted to conquer first.
After some research, Jia came across Jason
Comely's Rejection Therapy
concept through FounderDating Forum and decided to do it: he
will go through 100 days of Rejection Therapy, aiming to have one
rejection per day by making unusual and wacky requests all
with the goal as Jia says, "to desensitize myself from the pain of
rejection and overcome my fear." Jia videos each of his rejection attempts which is how the Krispy Kreme visit exploded online.
When we learned of his project, we immediately connected with Jia on
twitter (@JiaJiang)
and sent him a copy of Go for No! to aid him in the mission. (And
thanks to many of you who wrote us about Jia's videos!)
Jia is living a 'Go for No!' experiment and it is thrilling to
watch him do it. He's proving that 'go for no' is not just a business
philosophy, it's a life philosophy.
