Are You After Approval From Others?
by Andrea
Waltz
When Richard and I handed my Dad our very first brochure for
our business I felt like I was showing off a class project.
And thinking back, it probably looked pretty close to that too. Now,
lucky for me my Dad is not a dream stealer. He just nodded, asked a few
questions and handed the brochure back to me. Not particularly
supportive nor was it hostile.
The people who know you... well, they know you. My Dad knows about the
time (I was 5), that I snuck into the
medicine cabinet, got into the Flintstones™ Vitamins and ate
most of them - enough to cause a terrible stomach
ache. I finally admitted it after being seriously
interrogated. And of course that's just the beginning of
everything my Dad has seen of me over the years. So, sure he's a little
reserved when I show him my latest venture.
It's natural to want our family and friends to support us. But as
tempting as it might be, looking for approval is a fool's errand. Just
do your business, do your stuff, and your actions will speak louder
than words.
Hang out with your colleagues - the people who are doing what you do.
They get you, support you, and will cheer you on. And that's the point
- stick with the people that will build you up, not tear you down.
Don't worry about the naysayers, dream stealers, or even those that are
neutral. They'll come around... but even if they don't, so what?
Ultimately, it's never about getting approval from anyone else but
yourself! Which reminds me...
the Flintstones™ Vitamins? Totally worth
it.
