Thought of the Month |
"You
cannot be truthful if you are not courageous. You cannot be loving if
you are not courageous. You cannot be trusting if you are not
courageous. You cannot enter into reality if you are not
courageous. Hence courage comes first... and everything else
follows." - Osho

Play
'Em Where They Lie
by Richard
Fenton & Andrea
Waltz
Until
the rules were changed in 1952, a golf ball had to be played where it
landed. Which brings us to the story of the Shawnee Invitational for
Ladies of 1912 where a female golfer sent a shot into the Binniekill
River. Where... amazingly... the ball did not sink but,
rather, continued to float on the top of the water.
The golfer did the only thing she could think to do - she jumped in a
rowboat and set out after it to "play the ball where it lies"
(with her husband rowing her out). When she caught up to the
ball she stood up in the boat, pulled the club back, and took a whack
at it. Numerous times. Over and over and over
again. Until... yes, she managed to make contact and sent the
ball flying up on the shore... 1.5 miles from where she started the
hole! Now, she would have to fight her way back to the
course, through (you guessed it) a heavily wooded forest.
166 strokes later (meticulously
recorded by her loving husband) - not
for the round, just the 130-yard, par 3, 16th hole - she putted the
ball into the cup.
She could have whined. She could have moaned. She could have said, "Why
me?" and quit. But she did none of that. She simply
played-it-where-it-laid until she'd done what she set out to do,
regardless of the number of strokes it took.
