Do You Believe? Really...
by Richard Fenton & Andrea Waltz

One of our favorite books is Richard Bach's now-famous classic, Jonathan Livingston Seagull. It's about (you guessed it) a seagull that learns about life and flight. JLS is a book that never would have been a success - heck, it never would have been published - were it not for a woman named Eleanor Friede.

An independent book producer, Friede liked the book - originally targeted at children - and she made the rounds to over two dozen New York publishing houses, none of which took interest.  In fact, one of the people she took it to called it a "nothing book."

So one Sunday morning Eleanor Friede found herself sitting on the deck of her beach house, when it suddenly hit her: this wasn't a children's book - it was a story for adults.  Her marketing strategy had been all wrong.  Now, don't misunderstand; it was STILL an uphill battle. But she did finally convince a publisher do a small print run.  And even though it sold out its first release in just a few months, the publishers didn't want to do a second printing. But Friede convinced them to invest in a second print run. And then a third.  And even though the book received no national attention or promotional budget worth mentioning, she believed in its message with all her heart.

Today, Jonathan Livingston Seagull... the book no one wanted to publish... has sold over 11 million copies in twenty-seven languages.

So, what is it that YOU believe in?  Or say you believe in?  And do your actions match your words?  If not, maybe it's time to really believe.

P.S. Many people do not know that the very first printing of Go for No! was back in 2000.  And it didn't sell well! In fact, it took us about 4 years to sell through that first print run of 5,000 copies.  But we did another print run, this time with a new cover, and it sold better. Then we changed the cover again, shifted to a new marketing strategy, and what do you know - suddenly we had an 'overnight success' on our hands!  In fact, last year alone we sold 22,000 copies and now have 135,000 copies in print in 4 languages.  Trust us when we tell you... we're just getting started.

NOtable Quotables from the Go for No! Movie

"I hear "No" a lot, and as long as I'm continuing to strive to be somewhere past where I am now, I'll continue to hear NOs.  In fact, on an intellectual basis I'll probably start to worry the day I stop hearing NOs, because I'll know that's the day I'm not continuing to progress." - Bob Burg, Co-author, The Go-Giver
