"Make
it a rule of life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is an
appalling waste of energy; you can't build on it; it's only for
wallowing in." -Katherine Mansfield

The
Meaning of Success (and why Wikipedia has it all wrong!)
by
Richard Fenton & Andrea Waltz
Ask 100 people what
"success" means and you're sure to get 100 different answers.
Not that the answers will be TOTALLY different, because there some
recurring themes. For example...
Social status
Money
Achievement of a goal
Getting what you want
Living a meaningful life
(however you define "meaningful")
And that's fine - whatever definition is yours is... yours!
But here's what fries our bacon. In prep for this article we
'googled' the word "SUCCESS" and the first listing was for
Wikipedia. Deciding to check it out, we found exactly what
you'd expect; many of the items listed above. But then it
said... the opposite of failure. Now
the gloves are off. Success has many definitions, but "the
opposite of failure" is not one of them! Why?
Because to achieve meaningful success in life, YOU...
MUST... FAIL. And the more significant the success, the more
significant the failure must be, both in terms of quantity and
magnitude. So how can they possible be opposites? Well, they aren't.
As we point out in our Mastering Go for No! Audio Training program...
"The problem is that most people tend to think in
absolutes. In the minds of people with rigid
thinking, opposites must be exactly that -
opposite. They have difficulty allowing
FAILURE and SUCCESS... YES and NO... to co-exist on
the same end of the performance spectrum."
Interestingly, the idea that YES and NO... or Failure and
Success... are opposites, is very much a Western point of
view. In the East, failure and success are
intermingled. Like the two halves of a YIN & YANG
symbol, each half is distinctly black and white... but intermingled
nonetheless.
To reach your full potential you MUST stop thinking of Success and
Failure as being OPPOSITES, and, rather, merge them into the Yin
& Yang they really are - opposite sides of the same
coin that rely and depend on one another. You must
get rid of the notion that your choices are success OR failure. Your
choices are always success AND failure.

Quotables from
the Go for No! Movie |
"I
don't like "No" at all. I don't. I like people to say, "Yes, I love
you. You're handsome and thin. Even if they're lying, I love
that! So, what does "No" really mean for me? I think now,
especially after reading your book, and you know, the genius of your
book is the simplicity: Fail till you win. Now I think, "No, not the
right fit," or "They're not ready yet," or "Take another
shot" But, it's just an opportunity." - Tom Schaff

Recommend... |
This week we recommend a
movie that probably slipped thru the cracks... My Date With
Drew. Winner of an award at the 2004 Vail Film Festival, this
movie documents filmmaker Brian Herzlinger's attempt to parlay $1,100
he won on a game show into a date with actress Drew Barrymore (note:
the winning answer on the game show was Drew Barrymore!)
Stuck with this stingy budget and allowing himself just 30 days to
accomplish his mission (he had to return the camera to Circuit City
within that time to get a full refund), this short, breezy movie is not
just fun and entertaining to watch... it's a story of the power of
persistence at its best. Go find it!

Week's Trivia
Answer |
E) The United Fruit
Company. Never heard of it? Well, maybe it's because they
changed their name to... Chiquita! In fact, the banana
company's power over countries turned many of them into what
we commonly refer to today as... "Banana Republics."
