Tale
of Two Subscribers
by
Richard Fenton & Andrea Waltz
Every week, after sending out our ezine, we get notes with feedback and
comments from subscribers. A lot of the feedback is from
people telling us they liked a particular article, or thinking us for
taking the time to put the ezine together in the first place.
But... every now and then... we get some "negative" feedback.
Like this past week. Fortunately, over the years we have
developed a "thicker skin" and are not as affected by it. As we tell
people about hearing the word "NO", it isn't a reflection of us as people...
just the ideas.
Here's what's cool... when we get two comments in the same
week, about the same issue... and they are virtually
opposites. For example:
Subscriber Comment #1: "Even though you want it to have a positive
effect, the result (of your ezine) is negative and uninspiring."
Ouch! But then (about the same issue!)...
Subscriber #2: "This week's 'Noteworthy thought of the week' is the
most beautiful thing! You guys keep me alive and kicking. I
do not know what to say...it is you, people that I never met who make a
difference for me in a more profound way than many of my friends and
even some family members."
So which one is right? Feedback from Subscriber #1 or Subscriber
#2? The answer is... both. They are both
right because they are both entitled to their opinions and
their personal tastes. We have to understand that
feedback is not really about the "receiver" - it's about
the "sender."
To take feedback "personally" is like Rocky Road ice
cream being jealous because someone picked the World
Class Chocolate (Richard's personal favorite) instead. So,
when someone says "NO" to you... even if they say it in a hostile
way... remember it's about their opinions, their needs, and their
personal taste. It's NOT about you.

Quotables from
the Go for No! Movie |
"I
think people have a fear of hearing the word, "No," because a lot of
people take the word "No" personally, and they view "No" as someone
saying that they're not good enough, when really all a client is saying
is "No" to the service or the product that they're offering at that
particular time." - Josh Mueller

Recommend... |
John Maxwell's book,
"Put Your Dream to the Test." Quite honestly, we've never
been super-Maxwell fans
- his stuff is usually a bit too general and basic for our tastes - but
with this book Maxwell has hit a home run. No, make that a grand
slam! What's the difference between a dream and someone who
achieves a dream? Maxwell lays it all out in this masterpiece. Do you
have a dream? This book will put it to the test, so be
prepared!
