The
Downside of Passion - Part 2
by
Richard Fenton & Andrea Waltz
Last week we began to
make the case for a little less "passion"... a
greater emotional distance from outcomes so that we
operate on a more even keel. No where is this more important
than when it comes to "going for no."
Top performers work hard to have a more equal reaction to success and
failure… yes and no. They strive to achieve an
even keel. Anyone can be happy and positive when things are going their
way, when things go right. That’s easy! The
question is: What is your attitude… how do you
respond… when the going gets tough, when things
don’t go the way you’d like.
Take the game of poker. A few bad hands in a row is called
“going on tilt.” The best players control
their emotions (right down to their poker face) whether their luck is
with them or not. The question is, when things don’t go your
way, especially for extended periods of time, can you keep yourself
from going on tilt?
When the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers in the World
Series a few years back, Cardinal shortstop David Eckstein had
a bad start. In fact, in his first 11 plate appearances, Eckstein went
0-11. He didn’t get his first hit until late in the
third game. But, then he got 8 hits in his next 11 at bats, ending up 8
for 22 with a .364 batting average and being named series
MVP! Even when things were going poorly, Eckstein managed to
keep his emotions in check and not go on tilt.
So, the next time you present merchandise to a customer and they say
NO, you can experience less pathos by saying, "SWSWSW” (some
will, some won’t, so what?) And, for that matter,
the next time you’re successful… like a team that
has just won its first round in a playoff
game… you might want to keep some of that passion
“in check” because there’s another game
coming up, one that requires you at your dispassionate best. Is this
easy? No. But you can learn to do it and you'll be more
effective because of it.

"I
really want to put failure in perspective. I say in my show, 'Failure
is overrated.' We need to not be scared of it, and, in cases, we need
to court it. If you're not succeeding fast enough, you're probably not
failing fast enough, and you can't have one without the other. So, if
you're going to avoid one, you're going to avoid both." Joe

This recommendation is
specifically for people in the world of Network Marketing. It's a
training and development tool called "DeckWork Marketing" created by
Michael Linden. Just what it sounds like, it's a deck of cards (52 in
all, just like a playing card deck) each of which offers field-tested
