Thought of the Week |
Regardless
of what your particular product or service is, people are drawn to you
(or not) because of how you make them feel. They don't simply
want to buy your product, they want to be uplifted, encouraged, changed
in some way. - from 'Go-Givers Sell More' by Bob Burg
& John David Mann

The
Downside of Passion -
Part 1
by
Richard Fenton & Andrea Waltz
According to the
teachings of Aristotle, there are three main elements when it comes to
influencing thoughts and actions; Ethos, Logos, and Pathos.
ETHOS has to do with character, like in the word ETHICS.
LOGOS has to do with reason, like in the word LOGICAL.
PATHOS has to do with emotion, like in PASSION.
You can't be too ethical or, for that matter, logical. But
what
about being too passionate? Rod Stewart might disagree... and what
we're about to say might be a bit counter-intuitive to what
you
currently believe and been taught. But, to be more effective
in
virtually any endeavor, most of us need to have less pathos in regards
to the outcome of a given situation. Not zero passion, mind
you,
but probably less than you're currently experiencing.
Consider, for example, how a doctor must remain unemotional and
dispassionate in order to conduct surgery. It's not
that
doctors are completely dispassionate - they do care about the
patient and the outcome - but a certain amount
of detachment is required to be effective. In fact,
often
doctors are encouraged to avoid operating on relatives and loved
ones because being to close to the patient might bring in too much
emotion... too much pathos... to do the job
efficiently.
Another example is in negotiating. The first rule of effective
negotiating is to not care about whether you make the deal.
And
when you up the ante to hostage negotiation, can you imagine the FBI
sending someone in to negotiate the release of a friend or relative?
Never! This need for detachment is required of us as
well, no
matter what we do for a living. Because it is often our
attachment to the outcome of a given situation that makes us less
effective, whether it's selling product or managing a team.
Keep in mind we're not telling you to be emtionless, boring, or to
remove
excitement from your life... but next week we'll cover how to
make
our passion work for
us rather than against us!

Have you heard of
"The Go-Giver" by Bob Burg and John David Mann? It's a great little
book that was released 2 years ago - teaching some awesome principles
about the power of giving. Without any big budget advertising
or
"star power," it's become quite a grassroots phenomena - continuing to
sell big and inspire reviews and blog posts week after week.
The
authors have done it again - creating what we believe will be an
instant bestseller with their latest, "Go-Givers
Sell More." This
powerful little gem begins where their
first book left off - by giving us real world methods and examples of
applying these fun and effective principles to our businesses! It's
masterful!
