Hidden Treasure
by
Richard Fenton &
Andrea Waltz
Jinx Taylor (cool name, huh?) was a big fan of the PBS show Antiques
Roadshow. And when she heard AR was coming to Raleigh, North
Carolina, she decided to go. But what to bring?
That's when Jinx pulled out four pieces of jade her late father had
purchased in Beijing, China, during trips there in the 1930's and 40s
while in the army. Turns out her father had good
taste. Because when the appraiser, Jim Callahan, saw the
carvings of dragons, clouds, pearls and a wave motif, he knew the
imperial symbols of Ch'ien-lung instantly. And when Jinx was told the
value - $1.7 million - she just about fell over.
The amount was so large in fact that Jinx plans to sell the pieces, not
because she wants the money, but because she can't afford the insurance
to keep them! The Big Q for us all is: What hidden, million-dollar
treasures do we own? And we don't mean jade or other pieces
of art - we're talking about million dollar talents and ideas that we
don't realize the value of. If you heard "The Talent
Roadshow" was coming to town, what would you bring? More
importantly, why are you waiting for someone else to tell you what
you're worth?

"I
think the best way to deal with failure is not to give up. It's OK to
have a little self pity party, it's OK to get in the corner and cry for
half an hour, but sooner or later you must rise and you must say, "I
will do this again. I will not let this be the end of it all. There is
a rainbow at the end of all of this, and I may have to listen to one,
two, three, four or five NOs before I get to the 'maybe' and I get to
the yes." - Nido Qubein, President, High Point
