The Value of an Idea
by
Richard Fenton &
Andrea Waltz
Everyone is crazed about gas prices these days - well, actually, since
the cost has gone down from a high of $4+/gallon, people are actually
happy with gas at $3 per gallon. But it's funny how people
don't realize how much they pay per gallon for other commonly used
items.
For example...
... Diet Snapple - 16 oz. bottle at $1.29 = $10.32 per gallon
... Evian - 9 oz. bottle at $1.49 = $21.19 per gallon
... Whiteout - 7 oz. bottle at $1.39 = $25.42 per gallon
... Brake Fluid - 12 oz. can at $3.15 = $33.60 per gallon
... Scope - 1.5 oz. travel size bottle at $.99 = 84.84 per gallon
... Pepto Bismol - 4 oz bottle at $3.85 = $123.20 per gallon
... Vick's Nyquil - 6 oz. bottle at $8.35 = $178.13 per
galloon
(By the way, did you realize that Evian spelled backwards is
Naïve!)
The point is: Value is not determined by the weight of an item, but in
the problem the item solves. Each of the items above solve a
problem, don't they? And what we'll pay for something - per
ounce or otherwise - is always in direct proportion to the size of the
problem we want solved.
Which brings us to one final question. How much are IDEAS and
information worth if you were charging by the ounce? After
all, ideas and information weigh nothing (unless they're in print and
you're weighing the paper). We contend that what you pay for
ideas and information - either via books, CDs, videos, consulting,
coaching, etc. - is very little if the ideas and information gleaned
solves a big enough problem.
Be open to new ideas and information, no matter how strange they may
seem (like going
for no!). Because an idea or
piece of information can be created out of nothing, transferred at the
speed of light and, when received by an open mind, can have
extraordinary impact on the lives of not just the receiver, but
millions.
Something to think about the next time you reach for cough syrup.

Next Stop: China!
We were very
excited after being approached by a major Chinese publishing house to
translate our book Go for No!® into simplified Chinese... with
an initial publishing run of 10,000 copies! What's funny is
the length of the Chinese version. When we wrote Go for No!® we
kept it intentionally short at just 80 pages so it could be read in a
single sitting (and read over and over again). But because a
single Chinese symbol covers so much text, the Chinese version will be
even shorter - just 50 pages or so! But as long as the
message is received, we don't really care how long (or short) the book
is.

Last
week Rich was talking with our good friend, George Campbell
(yes, the same George Campbell who speaks as Joe Malarkey® from
The Go for No! Movie) and before we knew it, the subject shifted to the
economy, politics, and other topics. That's when we
discovered we both considered Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED to be one of
our favorite books of all time (George was lucky enough to discover it
before he was only 20 - Rich didn't read it until his early
40's). If you haven't read it, don't waste another
day! Yes, it's big - over 1,000 pages of small print in the
paperback version - but you'll discover the message of this
eye-opening, life-changing masterwork (first published in 1957) is as
timely as ever- maybe even more so than Ayn Rand herself ever
considered possible.
