Remember when you were a little kid and making friends was easy?
You’d walk up to another kid on the playground and just start talking. No hesitation. No overthinking. No worrying about rejection. Before you knew it you were creating an imaginary world with a total stranger.
Ah, the good ol' days.
Somewhere along the way, we stopped doing that. We started waiting—waiting for someone else to go first, to reach out, to make the introduction, to give the referral, to offer the opportunity.
But my friend Catherine Brown has a different motto in her Good Humans Growth Network which is: GO FIRST.
- Go first with an introduction. Give the referral.
- Go first as an early buyer for a friend. They need pilot partners.
- Go first in sharing your hard-earned expertise.
- Go first in offering to help when you see a need.
The truth is the motto Go First is just another way of saying Go for No!—except, when you go first, you hardly ever get a No. The irony! 😏
The only thing stopping you is the fear that you might.
Most people will say yes to connection, to kindness, to generosity.
And if they don't? You've still taken the lead. You've still opened a
door. You've still made an impact.
So stop waiting. Go first.
Because the people who do? They win. Every time.
