The author of the book "Mindset," Carol Dweck, said this:
"Just because some people can do something with little or no training, doesn't mean that others
can't do it (and sometimes do it even better) with training."
We've been catching some of the Olympics lately.Ā
Some of the talent over there is astounding.Ā
There was a young woman on the high dive.Ā
She was pacing along the board, wiping her hands with a small towel, preparing. You could just tell she was getting focused. Suddenly she dropped the towel, turned, walked quickly to the edge of board... and dove
off.Ā
No hesitation.Ā
I pictured being up there myself and it was exactly the same.Ā
No hesitation... to start climbing down the ladder. šĀ
It's easy to look at the athletes and think they're just naturally gifted, but we forget about the years of hard work and intense training they put in.
The same goes for sales and other skills.Ā
It might seem like success is only for the naturally talented, but that's not true.Ā
Carol Dweck has popularized the term "growth mindset" and I'm
sure you've heard of it. It's the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. (As opposed to a "fixed" mindset that believes abilities are unchangeable.)Ā
If you feel stuck, remember the not-so-secret "secret" is to simply dig in and do the work knowing that with dedication and consistent practice, you can get
better. It starts with a growth mindset!Ā
