I was managing a large retail operation and talking to someone who knew I had an interest in getting involved in training new employees. It wasn’t a promotion exactly but it would give me added responsibility, more visibility, and I loved teaching the company mission, values, and sales and customer service standards.  

My mindset was: do good work, and people will notice. Then this person gave me some advice: “You need to make sure that the Leadership Team knows you’re interested. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

The problem was, I did not identify as a “squeaky wheel!”
